As per reports, the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) on Monday (01 June) announced that the US may impose an additional 25 percent tariff on imports from Brazil under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974.
• Reports indicate that the proposed measure stems from an investigation initiated in July 2025, which concluded that several Brazilian policies and practices are considered unreasonable and impose restrictions on US trade.
• US authorities on Monday (01 June) stated that the investigation cited concerns relating to digital commerce and electronic payment services, preferential tariff policies, intellectual property protection, anti-corruption measures, market access for ethanol, and illegal deforestation.
• A public consultation process is currently underway as of Thursday (04 June), with comments accepted until 01 July and a public hearing scheduled for 06 July. The legal deadline for implementing corrective measures is 15 July.
• Reports indicate that several products have been excluded from the proposed tariffs to avoid disruptions to the US economy and to preserve access to goods that cannot be sufficiently produced domestically. Exemptions include fruits and nuts, crude oil and petroleum derivatives, pharmaceutical compounds, fertilizers, beef, coffee, rare earth minerals, certain metals and ores, as well as Brazilian aircraft and aircraft components.
