As per reports, a fire broke out at the roof area of the Velodrome at the Olympic Park on Avenida Embaixador Abelardo Bueno in Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro, during the early hours of Wednesday (08 April).
• The Rio de Janeiro Military Fire Department was reportedly called at 0417 hours local time (0717 hours UTC), and around 60 firefighters from six stations, supported by more than 20 vehicles, were deployed to contain the fire.
• Initial reports stated that the fire affected the lining and parts of the roof made of synthetic material, while internal sections of the facility, including sensitive areas such as the Olympic Museum space, were preserved.
• Later updates indicated the fire reignited at around 1100 hours local time (1400 hours UTC), generating visible dark smoke over Barra da Tijuca and prompting renewed firefighting operations.
• As of 1500 hours UTC on Wednesday (08 April), the fire at the Velodrome in Rio de Janeiro’s Olympic Park had been brought under control, with no injuries reported.
• The fire reportedly affected the venue’s roof or fabric ceiling area, while the interior, including the Olympic Museum area, was not significantly impacted.
