As per reports, Pakistan’s opposition parties have launched a nationwide protest campaign against the proposed 27th Constitutional Amendment. Following are the latest details as of Monday (10 November):
• The movement, involves blocking parliamentary proceedings, while public mobilisation and nationwide street protests are likely to follow.
• In the first phase of the protest, opposition parties have warned of protests within the parliament until the amendment is withdrawn, with plans for a National Consultative Conference in Islamabad to discuss protest strategy. The opposition alliance has warned that it will disrupt proceedings in the National Assembly to prevent the passage of the bill.
• Following this, nationwide outreach to lawyers, bar councils, civil society, media, and business associations will commence. Opposition parties have warned of nationwide “Black Day” if the amendment is approved, wherein citizens will wear black armbands as a mark of protest.
