Tracking Id: RINTP3511240560

Description:

As per reports, the Constitutional Court suspended Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra from duty on Tuesday (01 July) pending its consideration of the case against her involving a controversial phone conversation with Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen.

• The nine Constitutional Court judges resolved unanimously to accept the senators’ petition against Ms Paetongtarn continuing as premier for consideration and temporarily suspended her from office by seven votes to two.
• However, she had also nominated herself for the extra post of culture minister in the new Cabinet, which was signed by the King and published in the Royal Gazette shortly before the court made its decision on Tuesday (01 July).
• She stands accused of lacking qualifications and integrity under Sections 160 (4) and (5) of the constitution. The complaint also alleges that she lacks honesty and engages in conduct that constitutes a grave breach of ethical standards.
• Deputy Prime Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit is the acting Prime Minister.

Background:

Thailand has been witnessing widespread political and civil discord as Paetongtarn Shinawatra allegedly kowtowed before Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen and criticised a Thai army commander during a phone call on 15 June intended to defuse escalating border tensions with Cambodia. She has since apologised and said her remarks were a negotiating tactic.

Impact:

Authorities are to maintain heightened security and vigil, especially around the Constitutional Court at Chaengwattana Road. Additional deployment of personnel is also likely as further demonstrations related to the matter cannot be entirely ruled out.

Further, heightened security is also expected around following areas;

• Pheu Thai Party office located in Huai Khwang, Bangkok at the OAI Building on New Phetchaburi Road. Surrounding areas such as New Phetchaburi Road, Phahonyothin Road, Ratchadaphisek Road, Vibhavadi Rangsit Road, and Pradiphat Road may witness traffic congestion and dynamic regulations as well.
• Democrat Party office located at Setsiri 2 Road, Phaya Thai, Bangkok.
• Thai Sang Thai Party office at Pla Khao 60, Anusawari, Bang Khen, Bangkok.
• Authorities may implement dynamic security measures to maintain the law and order situation in the aforementioned areas, which may lead to travel disruptions.
