As per reports, the following are the latest developments in the Israel-Hamas war as of Saturday (20 January):
• At 0935 hours of Saturday (20 January), rocket warning sirens were sounded in Northern Israel, in the areas of Arab al-Aramshe, Eilon and Idmit along the border with Lebanon.
• The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated that its troops are currently carrying out operations to neutralise Hamas rocket-launching bases across Gaza. The IDF confirmed that it located and destroyed six rocket-launching pads at a Hamas military compound in Khan Younis in Southern Gaza in its latest operation.
• Relatives and families of Israelis held hostage by Hamas gathered and set up tents near Prime Minister (PM) Benjamin Netanyahu’s home in Caesarea on Friday (19 January) night. They commenced an overnight protest demanding the return of all return of all Israeli hostages held by Hamas, dead and alive.
• The United States (US) is investigating the crash of one of its drones in Baghdad, Iraq, on Friday (19 January); Iran-backed local militias claimed they shot the drone down, however this is yet to be confirmed.
• The US Central Command (CENTCOM) stated that its forces conducted strikes against three Houthi anti-ship missiles that were aimed into the Southern Red Sea and were prepared for launch, and successfully destroyed them in the early hours of Saturday (20 January).
• During the call between US President Joe Biden and Israeli PM Netanyahu on Saturday (20 January), President Biden reportedly stated that a two-state solution is possible while PM Netanyahu is still in office. However, PM Netanyahu, in his statements, rejected the idea of Palestinian statehood.
• The US has also expressed concerns about a shooting incident in the West Bank, in which members of Israeli authorities fatally shot a Palestinian-American teenager. Both countries are looking into the incident, and further details are awaited.
