As per reports, as of 2200 hours local time (2100 hours UTC), one of the runways at Warsaw Chopin Airport (WAW) has been temporarily closed after routine inspections identified cracks in the runway surface on Sunday (28 June).
• Airport authorities have reportedly implemented the closure as a precautionary safety measure to eliminate any potential risk to aircraft operations.
• According to reports all flight operations have been redirected to the airport’s remaining operational runway. While the airport continues to operate, the reduced runway capacity is expected to result in delays to departing and arriving flights.
• Airport authorities have indicated that repair works are scheduled to take place overnight from Sunday (29 June) to Monday (30 June), when lower temperatures may allow the application of specialised sealing material. However, current daytime temperatures exceeding 30 degrees Celsius have reportedly been preventing immediate repairs.
