As per reports, President Yoon Suk Yeol was arrested on Sunday (19 January), after the Seoul Western District Court issued an arrest warrant for his imposition of martial law. Following are the latest updates as of Thursday (23 January) –
• President Yoon Suk Yeol will appear before the Constitutional Court for his impeachment trial on Thursday (23 January) for the second time. Former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun will also be present at this hearing.
• A special committee in the National Assembly investigating insurrection allegations related to President Yoon’s martial law declaration has issued orders to bring in key officials as witnesses to testify at its hearing. The individuals summoned included the president, former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun, former Defense Intelligence Commander Noh Sang-won, Lt. Gen. Kwak Jong-keun, the former head of the Army Special Warfare Command, Brig. Gen. Koo Sam-hoe, former commander of the 2nd Armored Brigade, and Maj. Gen. Moon Sang-ho, the former chief of the Defense Intelligence Command.
• Ruling People Power Party (PPP) lawmakers opposed the Parliaent’s order, calling it a politically motivated attempt to publicly humiliate the embattled president.
• Yoon has continued to refuse being interrogated by the Corruption Investigation Office (CIO) for High-ranking Officials on Wednesday (22 January), prompting investigators to explore the option of forcing him to comply with the summons.
• The deadline for Yoon’s detention has been pushed to 2105 hours on Friday (24 January), as he refused to be interrogated regarding insurrection charges and abuse of power.
• 56 people have been put under arrest on Wednesday (22 January) for their involvement in and around the violence at Seoul Western District Court on Sunday (19 January). They are accused of breaking into the courthouse complex, committing vandalism inside the court, blocking a car carrying prosecutors and investigators in charge of Yoon’s case, climbing over the walls of the courthouse or assaulting police officers on duty.
• The police have so far apprehended 90 people in connection with violent disorder at the Seoul Western District Court and the Constitutional Court between Saturday (18 January) and Sunday (19 January) and requested arrest warrants for 66 of them. Then the prosecution sought arrest warrants for 63 suspects and the court issued warrants for everyone except five.
