As per reports, the following are the latest details regarding the Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) outbreak in Maharashtra as of Thursday (20 February):
• With no fresh Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) cases reported on Wednesday (19 February), the total number of GBS cases reported in the district remained at 211 cases. Out of these, 183 are confirmed GBS cases and 28 cases are suspected GBS cases.
• However, the death toll of GBS in Maharashtra has now risen to 19, with 11 fatalities in Pune alone, after two deaths among suspected patients were reported on Wednesday (19 February). While the number of fresh cases has declined, health experts claim the city will witness a surge in the number of deaths among suspected GBS patients.
• Of the total 211 cases, 42 are from the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), 94 from newly-added villages in the PMC area, 32 from neighbouring Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), 33 from Pune’s rural parts and 10 from other districts. A total of 139 patients have been discharged so far, while 39 are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and 18 others on ventilators as of Wednesday (19 February).
• Furthermore, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is collaborating with the Groundwater Survey and Development Agency (GSDA) to map borewells, including both private and government-owned, within its civic limits to assess water quality and enhance groundwater utilization, amid the backdrop of GBS.
