As per reports, heavy rainfall caused the Vienna River and the Danube Canal to overflow on Sunday (15 September), leading to the closure of roads and metro stations, as well as causing evacuations and power cuts in several areas of the Austrian capital.

Austrian authorities on Sunday (15 September) declared the northeastern province of Lower Austria a disaster area, where one firefighter was killed.

• Local authorities on Sunday (15 September) closed the Westautobahn, Austria’s oldest motorway, which connects the capital with Salzburg as it passes through the federal state of Lower Austria.
• Other roads in the city, as well as sections of the U4 and U6 underground lines, which run parallel to the Vienna River, were also closed.
• The Vienna River, which runs between residential buildings, burst its banks in Penzing, where its level rose from 50 centimetres to 2.26 metres in a few hours on Sunday (15 September). The Danube Canal, a parallel branch of the river of the same name, also overflowed, with the water level rising to completely cover the pedestrian area on its banks and the cycle paths, forcing the closure of these roads.
• In the western districts of Vienna, in particular in Penzing, Leasing and Hietzing, dozens of people were evacuated on Sunday (15 September) morning as a precautionary measure against flooding.
• Public utility Wien Energie warned that the storm could cause temporary power and heating cuts in several areas of the capital, which has already happened in Penzing and in the districts of Landstrasse and Donaustadt, both near the Danube.
• The situation is also affecting rail transport. ÖBB reported cancellations and service interruptions, especially on the western Austrian route, which is completely blocked by flooding.
• In the state of Lower Austria, the largest and most populous in the country, more than 1,100 homes have been evacuated due to the overflow of rivers and reservoirs. In St. Pölten, the state capital, just 60 kilometres west of Vienna, many streets are inaccessible due to accumulated water.
• In the southern state of Styria, around 4,000 homes were left without electricity on Sunday (15 September) due to landslides and falling trees caused by heavy rain and hurricane-force winds .
