According to reports, the recent outbreak of diphtheria in Narayanpatana and Bandhugaon areas of Koraput district has raised significant concerns among health authorities and the local community. The disease, which has already claimed the lives of two children in Bandhugaon and led to the identification of three suspected cases in Narayanpatana, has prompted a proactive response from health teams and officials.
• Health authorities have mobilized two teams, each comprising ten members, to conduct intensive door-to-door surveys in affected areas. These teams are diligently screening individuals for symptoms such as cold, cough, and throat infections, which are indicative of diphtheria.
• Swab tests are being administered to confirm cases, and individuals showing symptoms are being advised to seek treatment at Narayanpatana and Bandhugaon community health centers (CHCs).
• Despite these efforts, there are significant challenges. Tribal families, deeply rooted in cultural practices and beliefs, are hesitant to admit their sick children to hospitals. Many prefer traditional treatments administered at home, delaying proper medical intervention. This cultural reluctance poses a barrier to effective disease control and management efforts.
• Health officials, led by Koraput’s Additional District Medical Officer NM Satapathy, acknowledge the difficulty in persuading families to seek hospital care.
• They have emphasized the importance of community engagement and cooperation in overcoming these challenges. Interventions from local authorities are sometimes necessary to convince families of the critical need for hospitalization and professional medical care.
• As the situation evolves, health authorities have implemented a 20-day door-to-door health survey plan to contain the outbreak. Currently, two children suspected of having diphtheria are isolated at Koraput Medical Hospital, underscoring the urgency of ongoing surveillance and treatment efforts.
• In response to the outbreak, both individuals and organizations are urged to prioritize early medical intervention, adhere to health guidelines, and foster community awareness. These measures are crucial in controlling the spread of diphtheria and safeguarding the health of vulnerable populations in Koraput district.
