The India Meteorological Department (IMD), in its 0900 hours update, on Friday (30 August), has issued the following directives over the cyclonic formation over coasts of Gujarat (named as ‘Asna’ by Pakistan’s Meteorological Department);
• The deep depression over Kachchh and adjoining areas of Saurashtra, Northeast Arabian Sea and Pakistan has moved west-southwestwards with a speed of 10 kmph during past six hours and lays centered Kachchh coast and adjoining areas of Pakistan and Northeast Arabian Sea, 145km west-northwest of Bhuj, 50 km west-northeast of Naliya (42631), and 200 km southeast of Karachi (41780).
• It is likely to move nearly westwards, emerge into northeast Arabian sea off Kachchh and adjoining Pakistan coasts and intensify into a cyclonic storm during next 12 hours. Thereafter, it would continue to move nearly west-northwestwards over northeast Arabian sea away from Indian coast during subsequent two days, by Sunday (01 September).
• Accordingly, squally wind speed reaching 45-55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph is likely over the interior districts of south Gujarat region and Saurashtra and Kutch, on Friday (30 August).
• Gale wind speed reaching 60-70 kmph gusting to 80 kmph is likely to prevail over northeast Arabian sea off Gujarat and Pakistan coasts from noon of Friday (30 August). It is likely to increase becoming 70-80 kmph gusting to 90 kmph from night of Friday (30 August) till Sunday (01 September) and decrease gradually thereafter.
• Very rough to high sea condition is likely to prevail over northeast and adjoining east-central and Arabian sea off Gujarat and Pakistan coasts during Friday (30 August) to Sunday (01 September).
• On Friday (30 August), red alert for extremely heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning is active in Kachchh, Morbi, Jamnagar, Rajkot, Devbhoomi Dwarka, Porbandar, and Junagarh, while an orange alert for very heavy rainfall, thunderstorm and lightning is active in Gir Somnath. Additionally, there is a yellow alert in the remaining districts of the state.
