As per reports, around 73 people have been reported dead, several injured and missing, while the rescue operations are ongoing. Several are feared trapped under collapsed structures. This is following a significant 7.6 magnitude earthquake that struck near the Noto Peninsula, roughly 300 km (190 miles) from Tokyo, on Monday (01 January).

• As per the Japan Meteorological Agency, no tsunami warning is in effect as of now on Thursday (04 January) but aftershocks are to be expected for the next few days.
• As per reports, more than 33,000 people have evacuated their homes and about one lakh houses have no water supply.
• Around 600 tremors have been reported, raising fears of landslides and further damage to the infrastructure.
• 300 people have been reported injured, with over 31,800 in shelters, and at least 200 buildings had collapsed.
• A sea route has been opened to deliver aid and some larger trucks were now able to reach some of the more remote areas.
• However, cold weather, heavy rains triggering landslides are likely to hamper the rescue operations.
