As per reports, Uganda is introducing a 21-day quarantine for returning Ugandan citizens with a history of travel to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) from Sunday (25 October).
• The measure forms part of enhanced Ebola prevention measures amid regional concerns over cases linked to travel in East Africa.
• Uganda has reported no confirmed Ebola cases within the country in connection with the current regional developments. However, authorities are investigating a Nigerian Ebola case involving a woman who had travelled from Uganda, in coordination with Nigerian authorities and international partners.
• Investigations into the Nigerian case include a review of genomic sequencing, travel history, movements and potential contacts.
• Genomic analysis reportedly found the virus closely related to the strain identified in Kenya’s index case.
• All 60 contacts associated with a Kenyan Ebola case have completed the 21-day monitoring period and been discharged.
• The contacts were traced through points of entry and exit, hotels and transport operators linked to travellers’ movements through Uganda.
• Uganda’s Ministry of Health has intensified health screening at Entebbe International Airport (EBB), Entebbe, Uganda, and at land border crossings.
• Travellers entering Uganda by air, land or water are required to complete a passenger locator form.
• Travellers with a recent history of travel to the DRC are temporarily prohibited from transiting through Uganda.
• The measures are precautionary and focused on border screening, traveller tracing and quarantine.
