MetService New Zealand has issued a thunderstorm outlook valid until midnight on Monday (06 October). A southwest flow over the North Island is expected to gradually turn northwesterly during the day, while a frontal system moves northward across the South Island.
• Gisborne and Tairawhiti: A low risk of isolated thunderstorms is forecast.
• Fiordland and Stewart Island: A low risk of thunderstorms exists this afternoon, increasing to a moderate risk in the evening. These storms may produce localised heavy rain at intensities of 10–15 mm per hour and small hail.
• West Coast and Southern Alps: A low risk of thunderstorms is expected to spread northwards during the evening and overnight.
• Elsewhere across New Zealand, the risk of severe convection or thunderstorms remains minimal.
