As per reports, the Swedish Parliament (Riksdagen) has voted through a proposal to introduce stop-and-search zones, which means from Thursday (25 April) police will be given the right to establish safety zones, stop and search people in temporarily designated areas in public spaces which could last for a maximum of two weeks if there were a significant risk of shootings or bombings in the area.
• Reports indicate that a total of 151 Ministers of Parliament on Wednesday (10 April) voted in favor of the bill and 148 voted against.
• Reportedly, the law gives the police the right to introduce a security zone in a certain area if, with regard to a conflict between groups, there is a tangible risk of criminal activity that includes shooting or explosions in the area.
• Reports indicate that every time the police decide on such a zone, they will go out with information to the residents and the public about where and when such a zone applies and clearly explain why the decision was made as well as how visitation is carried out.
• A decision to introduce a safety zone must be valid for two weeks at the latest but can be extended by a new decision. The decision can be appealed to the general administrative court.
