The Hong Kong Observatory has issued a standby signal No. 1 for Tropical Cyclone Toji in Hong Kong, on Wednesday (13 November), as the Severe Tropical Storm Nika, also known as typhoon Toji locally, advances towards Hong Kong. The typhoon is currently located about 310 kilometers southeast of Hong Kong, moving west-northwest with a speed of 85 kilometers per hour, and is expected to continue on this path through the South China Sea as of Wednesday (13 November).
The Observatory’s No. 1 typhoon signal is active and will remain in place until at least 1200 hours on Wednesday (13 November). As Typhoon Toji approaches, Hong Kong is forecasted to experience intermittent heavy rainfall and strong winds on Thursday (14 November). Showers and thunderstorms are expected through Thursday (14 November), with intensity increasing as the typhoon nears. Here are the latest details:
• Toji is forecast to pass approximately 200 kilometers south of Hong Kong by early morning hours of Thursday (14 November). The winds are expected to increase gradually, with strong gusts offshore and on elevated areas throughout the day of Thursday (14 November).
• The Observatory has announced that they may increase the warning to Typhoon Signal No. 3 between 1300 hours to 1600 hours on Wednesday (13 November), depending upon Toji’s intensity and proximity to the Pearl River Estuary.
• Under Signal No. 3, Kindergartens, schools for children with physical disabilities, and special needs schools are expected to close on Wednesday (13 November).
• The Hong Kong Observatory has announced that issuing on Signal No. 8 for typhoon Toji cannot be ruled out, depending upon intensity and proximity to the Pearl River Estuary in the morning hours of Thursday (14 November).
