As per reports, a series of explosions occurred at a military barracks in Viacha, Bolivia, approximately 30 kilometers from La Paz, at around 1430 hours local time (1830 hours UTC) on Friday (04 September). The affected facility is reported to have been used for the storage of black powder and pyrotechnic materials.
• Reports as of Friday (04 September) indicated that emergency responders, medical teams and military search units had arrived to evacuate the injured. More than 80 people received medical treatment at local facilities, while critically injured patients were transferred to hospitals in La Paz.
• Additionally, reports as of Saturday (05 September), stated that nearby residents were evacuated to temporary shelters due to structural damage to surrounding homes and risks associated with residual heat sources.
• Bolivian authorities and Army Commander Hector Alarcón on Monday (07 September) stated the updated fatalities and missing-persons figure. Health Minister Marcela Flores has reported that 84 people have received medical treatment since the explosion, with 31 individuals remaining hospitalised.
• As of Monday (07 September), Bolivian President Rodrigo Paz declared a period of national mourning and pledged financial and psychological assistance to the affected families.
