As per reports, the Confederación de Estudiantes de Chile (Confech) has confirmed its adherence to a national student march convoked by the Asamblea Coordinadora de Estudiantes Secundarios (ACES) for Thursday (14 May), in opposition to a series of education-related measures announced by the government of President José Antonio Kast.
• The march in Santiago is scheduled to commence at 1000 hours local time (1400 hours UTC) on Thursday (14 May) from Plaza Italia and is expected to conclude at Metro Los Héroes station.
• The march is jointly supported by the Confech, the ACES, the Red de Solidaridad Estudiantil, and the Federación de Estudiantes de la Universidad de Santiago (FEUSACH), bringing together secondary and university students under a unified front.
• The principal demands of the mobilisation include opposition to a three percent cut to the budget of the Ministry of Education; rejection of the government’s decision to limit access to university gratuity to students up to 30 years of age; opposition to the proposed ‘Escuelas Protegidas’ law; rejection of measures affecting debtors of the Crédito con Aval del Estado (CAE) student loan scheme; and broader opposition to the rising cost of living.
