As per reports, a section of the Puente Viejo (Arturo Alessandri) in Lautaro, La Araucania, partially collapsed on Friday (25 September).
• The collapse has occurred around 0130 hours local time (0430 hours UTC) on Friday (25 September) when part of the deck and supporting pillars failed, causing a visible displacement of the viaduct that crosses the Cautín River and connects the Guacolda sector with central Lautaro.
• Firefighters, Carabineros and municipal teams has secured the area and ordered a total closure of the bridge to vehicles and pedestrians.
• The structure is expected to be remain closed until the Dirección de Vialidad completes a technical assessment and determines repair or replacement options.
• Authorities attribute the failure to the combination of heavy rain and a high isotherm in the pre‑cordillera and cordillera zones, which increased runoff and river levels.
• Traffic is being rerouted via the newer Lautaro bridge over the Cautin.
