Inclement weather conditions forecast across Chile through Friday (02 October)

Risk level: Low Country: Chile

As per reports, Chile is expected to experience a series of frontal systems and an atmospheric river with widespread rainfall and mountain snowfall from the north to the austral zone, with the heaviest accumulations forecast for the south-central regions through Friday (02 October).

• Reportedly, the first frontal system moved through the early Wednesday (30 September), dropping 10 to 20 millimetre of rainfall from southern Maule to Los Lagos and snowfall above roughly 1,500 metres in the Andes.
• Forecast indicate a second, stronger system accompanied by a category one to two atmospheric river is forecast to arrive on the night of Thursday (01 October) and remain active with rainfall concentrated in Biobío, La Araucanía, Los Ríos and Los Lagos.
• Reportedly, cumulative totals between Thursday (01 October) afternoon and Friday (02 October) night could reach around 120 milli metre in the precordillera of La Araucanía and Los Ríos, and about 100 milli metre in the coastal mountains of Los Ríos and Los Lagos, with some models suggesting local totals up to 150 milli metre in exposed southern areas.
• Reports indicate the zero-degree isotherm is expected to initially sit above 2,500 metres, favouring rainfall at higher elevations and increasing runoff into rivers and streams on Friday (02 October) as colder air arrives, raising the risk of snowfall in the Andes of Biobío, Araucanía and Los Ríos.
