As per reports, a surge of protests occurred across multiple cities in Iran, driven by retirees, workers, and various segments of society demanding justice, accountability, and better living conditions on Sunday (05 January). The protests, sparked by widespread dissatisfaction with the government’s economic policies and corruption, come amid an ongoing economic crisis.

• In Isfahan, retirees from the steel industry resumed protests demanding pension adjustments in line with government regulations. Protests also took place in Ahvaz, where retirees from multiple sectors, including the steel industry and the Social Security Organization, rallied for higher pensions and essential services. Adding to the unrest, contract workers in the oil sector in Ahvaz protested against job insecurity, low wages, and poor contract terms. This widespread discontent has been met with solidarity from workers and retirees from different sectors, who have gathered outside government buildings to call for action.
• Similar protests occurred in Kermanshah, with retirees from public sectors and the telecommunications industry rallying against inflation and government promises that were deemed unfulfilled. In Bushehr, retired educators demanded government action on low pensions and unpaid retirement bonuses. Meanwhile, workers in Khorramshahr continued their 13-day strike in protest of unfair wages and poor working conditions. Protests in Shush and Rasht also reflected the anger over government corruption and living standards.
• This widespread unrest is rooted in Iran’s severe economic challenges, exacerbated by regional interventions and costly policies. Over USD 50 billion has been allocated to supporting foreign regimes and militias, and the nation’s nuclear program has further strained resources, deepening the financial burden on the population. As inflation continues to rise, basic goods are becoming increasingly unaffordable, leading to mounting public frustration. The protests demonstrate growing unity among various civil society groups and have the potential to escalate into a larger, nationwide uprising.
