As per reports, Venezuela was struck by two powerful earthquakes on Wednesday (24 June), causing significant structural damage in Caracas and surrounding areas.
• The US Geological Survey reported a magnitude 7.2 foreshock followed 39 seconds later by a magnitude 7.5 main earthquake.
• The epicentre was located near Morón in Carabobo State on Venezuela’s Caribbean coast, approximately 168 km west of Caracas, at a depth of 13 km.
• Multiple residential and commercial buildings reportedly collapsed in Caracas, including in the Altamira and San Bernardino districts.
• Damage was also reported at Simón Bolívar International Airport in Maiquetía, La Guaira State, where falling debris prompted evacuations.
• Emergency responders were deployed to conduct search and rescue operations in affected areas.
• Authorities reported that multiple individuals were injured and that some people may remain trapped beneath collapsed structures.
• Landslides were reported in Baruta, part of the Caracas metropolitan area, following the seismic activity.
• Officials warned that aftershocks are expected and may cause additional damage to already weakened buildings and infrastructure.
