As per reports, at approximately 0522 (local time) on Saturday (17 May) a magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck central Peru.
• According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter was located approximately six kilometers west of San Pedro.
• The Peruvian Geophysical Institute (IGP) reported a slightly different location, identifying the epicenter as 23 kilometers south of Puquio in the Ayacucho region, at a depth of 97 kilometers.
• The earthquake was widely felt across several regions, including Ayacucho, Arequipa, and Lima, as well as other areas in central and southern Peru
• Despite the magnitude, no significant structural damage or casualties have been reported as of now.
• The head of the IGP, Hernando Tavera, stated that while the quake was felt across a broad area, it was not intense at the surface due to its depth. He also noted that minor landslides may have occurred along some roads in the affected regions, though no specific incidents have been confirmed.
