The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has reported an earthquake of magnitude 5.8 near Nishinoomote in Kagoshima prefecture on Saturday (14 September) at 0803 hours local time.

• The earthquake was reported at a shallow depth of 28 km.
• No tsunami warning has been issued so far and the threat appears to have passed.
• No damages or deaths have been reported.
