Landslide blocks Hunku River in Solukhumbu raising flood risk on Friday (11 September)

As per reports, on Friday (11 September), a landslide in Gudel, Solukhumbu, has blocked the Hunku Khola River, forming a temporary landslide dam approximately 15 metres high and 100 metres long.

• Water has started flowing over the temporary blockage; however, authorities have warned that the dam could breach at any time, potentially triggering flooding along the Dudh Koshi River downstream.
• Although the landslide has currently stopped, authorities said further landslides remain possible. The incident has also affected operations at two hydropower projects in the area.
• Authorities are coordinating with relevant agencies in Okhaldhunga and Udayapur due to the potential downstream risk. Riverside communities have been advised to remain highly alert and stay in safe locations until further notice.
