As per reports, the Karnataka government has announced a seven-day mourning period and declared Friday (27 December), a public holiday following the death of former Prime Minister (PM) Dr. Manmohan Singh on Thursday (26 December) evening. Here are the additional details:
• In light of the former PM’s passing, the second day of the Congress centenary celebration was canceled and instead, a condolence meeting at 1030 hours will be held in Belagavi on Saturday (28 December). Karnataka Chief Minister (CM) Siddaramaiah and Deputy CM D.K. Shivakumar, along with other senior leaders have reportedly traveled to Delhi to pay their last respects.
• Further, political leaders across party lines, including the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), have suspended their scheduled programs, with the BJP reportedly cancelling a planned protest in Bengaluru.
• All schools, colleges, government offices, and banks in Karnataka will remain closed on Friday (27 December). Additionally, the banks will reopen on Monday (30 December) as Saturday (28 December) is the fourth Saturday of the month.
• The state will also observe restrictions on public celebrations during the mourning period, with the national flag flown at half-mast as a mark of respect.
