As per reports, the Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has issued an alert regarding the onset of the March-April-May (MAM) Long Rains season, urging the public to prepare for heavy rainfall and potential disruptions from Tuesday (18 march) onwards until 31 March.
• Rainfall is expected to intensify across several regions between Tuesday (18 March) and 31 March, particularly in the highlands east and west of the Rift Valley, Nairobi County, the Lake Victoria Basin, the southeastern lowlands, and northeastern Kenya.
• The official onset of the MAM 2025 season was confirmed from 10 – 16 March, especially for the highlands west of the Rift Valley and the Lake Victoria Basin. The remaining parts of the highlands east of the Rift Valley and the southeastern lowlands are expected to experience rainfall onset between Tuesday (18 March) and Monday (24 March), with the northeastern region following between Tuesday (25 March) and 31 March.
• While rainfall is expected to continue across multiple regions, intermittent dry spells are expected in some areas. The northwestern parts of Kenya and the coastal region are anticipated to experience occasional rainfall during March, with the coastal region expected to see peak rainfall in May 2025.
