According to the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) nowcast issued at 2200 hours on Wednesday (29 May), a red, orange, and yellow alert has been issued for heavy rainfall in Kerala. A red alert for heavy rainfall has been issued in Alappuzha, while an orange alert for moderate rainfall has been issued in Thrissur, Ernakulam, Kottayam, and Pathanamthitta. Additionally, a yellow alert is active in the rest of the region.
• Earlier, heavy rainfall was reported in parts of Kerala from Monday night (27 May) to Tuesday morning (28 May). Reportedly, the heavy rainfall was intensified by a cyclonic circulation over south Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
• The rain gauge at the Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) recorded approximately 103 mm of rain in just one hour on Tuesday morning (28 May).
• This heavy rainfall caused waterlogging and traffic congestion at various locations, including Edappally, Kakkanad, Infopark, Sahodaran Ayyappan Road, Ernakulam South railway station, KSRTC bus stand, Palarivattom, Kaloor, Aluva, Thrikkakara, Kalamassery, Tripunithura, Fort Kochi, Thoppumpady, Mattancherry, Mundamveli, and West Kochi areas.
• Furthermore, heavy rainfall in parts of Kottayam caused a landslide in Bharananganam village, damaging seven houses. No casualties were reported in the landslide. Mudslides triggered by heavy rainfall also disrupted traffic on Erattupetta and Vagamon roads in Kottayam.
• Waterlogging and flooding were also reported in Kottayam, Kollam, and Thiruvananthapuram. Widespread rainfall was also reported in Nedumangad, Neyyattinkara, Kattakkada, and Amboori areas.
• Additionally, a yellow alert for heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and strong surface winds has been issued across Kerala on Thursday (30 May). Emergency services are on high alert as the state braces for further rainfall. Authorities are working to clear waterlogged areas and provide relief to those affected by the extreme weather conditions.
