As per reports, less than a week after sick dairy cattle in Texas and Kansas tested positive for bird flu, Texas state officials reported on Monday (01 April) that a person in the state has been infected with the virus after coming into close contact with the infected cows.
• The primary symptom detected in the patient was conjunctivitis, also known as pink eye.
• It is the first human case of the highly pathogenic strain of avian influenza in Texas and the second in the US.
• Federal and state health authorities are investigating the outbreak, and the risk to the general public is deemed to be low as of Tuesday (02 April) as avian influenza A(H5N1) viruses have only rarely been transmitted from person to person.
