Flood warnings issued for low-lying areas of several river basins till Wednesday (22 May); red alert issued for strong winds/ rough seas

As per reports, the Irrigation Department has issued amber flood warnings for low-lying areas of the Attanagalu Oya River basin and the Kuda Ganga sub-basin of the Kalu River, effective until 2100 hours on Wednesday (22 May).

• Accordingly, there is a possibility of a minor flood situation occurring in low-lying areas of Kuda Ganga and Maguru Ganga valleys situated in Bulathsinhala, Madurawala and Palinda Nuwara district secretariat (DS) divisions as well as a possibility of a flood situation occurring in some of the low-lying areas of Attanagalu Oya and Uruwal Oya valleys situated in Diwulapitiya, Mirigama, Attanagalla, Mahara, Gampaha, Minuwangoda, Ja-Ela, Katana and Wattala DS divisions within the next 48 hours.
• Additionally, the Department of Meteorology has issued an advisory for strong winds and rough seas for naval and fishing communities in the deep-sea areas in the southeastern Arabian Sea and the southwestern Bay of Bengal Sea.
• It states that a low-pressure area is expected to form over the southwest Bay of Bengal around Wednesday (22 May) and is likely to initially move northeastwards, intensifying into a depression over the central Bay of Bengal by Friday (24 May).
