As per reports, a large farmers’ protest was reported outside the Sangrur District Administrative Complex (DAC) on Wednesday (03 January) over a series of demands. The protest was led by the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU-Ugrahan), and consisted of farmers mostly hailing from the Jahangir village in Sangrur district. Protestors held a ‘dharna’ (sit-in protest) outside the DAC, and sloganeered against the State and Central Governments.
The protest was organised over the long-standing demand for tracts of agricultural land that were purportedly promised to farmers of the Jahangir village several years ago, but never been officially handed over. The BKU stated that it will continue protests until the tracts of land are allotted to farmers in the village.
