As per reports, an intense and potentially record-breaking heat wave is reported to have settled over the New York City metropolitan area and the surrounding Tri-State region, with the National Weather Service (NWS) upgrading the previous Heat Watch to an Extreme Heat Warning until Wednesday (25 June).

• The event is forecast to continue through at least Wednesday (25 June), with heat index values exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit and possibly reaching 105 degrees Fahrenheit or more in certain urban zones.
• As of early Monday morning (23 June), Central Park recorded a heat index in the 90s, while Newark Airport approached a heat index of 100 degrees Fahrenheit by 0800 hours (local time) on Monday (23 June). During a public graduation event in Paterson, New Jersey, eight individuals were hospitalized, and an additional 50 people required on-site medical evaluation due to potential heat-related illnesses.
• Multiple school districts, including Newark Public Schools, have announced early dismissals in response to the hazardous conditions.
• Authorities have warned of potential power disruptions and have emphasised the health risks posed by prolonged exposure to extreme heat, particularly for vulnerable populations such as children, elderly individuals, and those with pre-existing health conditions.
