As per reports, on Wednesday (03 January), despite assurances by Chennai Collector Rashmi Siddharth Zagade and elected officials to address the ammonia gas leak at Coromandel International Limited’s fertilizer plant a week ago, Ennore residents asserted to continue their protest, demanding the plant’s permanent closure.

• The collector informed residents of awaiting a TNPCB report on the gas leak, expected within days. Meanwhile, Joint Commissioner of Police (Avadi) P Vijayakumar stated that despite filed cases, no arrests were made, however, he warned of potential arrests if the protest escalates.
• The Ennore Makkal Pathukappu Kuzhu (Ennore Residents’ Protection Group) emphasised the continuation of the protest until authorities outline a closure timeline, warning that while four out of 33 villages are presently engaged in the protest, residents from other villages will join if required.
• Meanwhile, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi President Thol Thirumavalavan met the protestors on Wednesday (03 January), announcing the party’s support and confirming plans for a demonstration in solidarity with their cause.
