As per reports, the Picos de Europa National Park authorities on Saturday (11 July) have issued a highly critical public safety warning strongly urging mountaineers and tourists to avoid entering the Peña Castil Ice Cave (Cueva de Hielo de Peña Castil).
• Park technical teams have raised the risk status to include an explicit “risk of death” due to the extreme structural instability of the interior ice block and roof vaults.
• Progressive degradation fueled by shifting climate conditions and warm seasonal fluctuations has caused severe thinning and volume loss at the cave’s entrance and main chambers.
• The structural weakness has led to an immediate risk of major internal cave-ins, detachment of overhead ice blocks, and floor collapses into deep subterranean crevices or sinkholes.
• The natural hazard is compounded by a high volume of unregulated tourist traffic and unauthorized visits, which accelerates structural melting due to human body heat and physical vibrations.
