As per reports, the German Weather Service (DWD) has issued severe weather warnings for snow, freezing rain, strong winds, and black ice for Germany until Friday (19 January).
• Level four alerts have been issued for Mainz and Saarbrücken.
• Level three alerts are issued for Munich, Stuttgart and Wiesbaden
• Level two alerts are issued for Erfurt and parts of Düsseldorf. The northern regions of Germany are placed under level one warning.
• Delays and cancellations are likely to impact scheduled flights during this period. Officials from the Frankfurt and Munich airports have warned of imminent cancellations of flights and extended delays until Friday (19 January).
• Rainfall is expected to continue in the southwest and southern regions. In Baden-Württemberg and southern Bavaria, significant amounts of heavy black ice are expected. Rainfall with low temperatures accompanied by black ice is expected across the Eifel, Hunsrück, Taunus, Spessart, southern Thuringia, Erzgebirge and Vogtland.
• Freezing rainfall is also expected in western Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland to southern Hesse and Lower Franconia.
• However, on Thursday (18 January), precipitation is forecast to transition into snow, and hazards from black ice are expected to ease. Black ice rain is forecast to last the longest in parts of eastern Bavaria.
• From the Eifel and the Cologne area across the Rothaar Mountains to Thuringia, persistent and heavy snowfall is forecast to accumulate up to 30 cm until Thursday (18 January) at 0500 hours (local time).
• Snowfall of up to 10 cm is expected in the regions of Neisse, Erzgebirge, Harz and Berlin.
