As per reports, a large demonstration against planned university budget cuts is scheduled to take place in central Vienna, Austria, on Thursday (22 October).
• The demonstration is scheduled to take place from 1500 hours local time (1300 hours UTC) to 2000 hours local time (1800 hours UTC).
• It is scheduled under the slogan “Alarmstufe Rot – #UnisRetten!” (Code Red – Save Universities).
• The demonstration is scheduled to begin at TU Wien, Karlsplatz 13, with organisers expecting approximately 20,000 participants, including students, teachers and university employees.
• The march is scheduled to depart from Resselpark at approximately 1600 hours local time (1400 hours UTC), proceeding via Karlsplatz, Lothringerstrasse and Schwarzenbergplatz towards the Ringstrasse, Franz-Josefs-Kai and central Vienna, before concluding between the University of Vienna and the Burgtheater.
• According to police authorities, spontaneous traffic restrictions, road closures and congestion are to be planned along the Ringstrasse, Zweierlinie and Franz-Josefs-Kai, with sections of the march route proceeding against the normal direction of traffic.
• Additional congestion is expected around Spittelauer and Rossauer Lände, Obere and Untere Donaustrasse, Praterstern, Praterstrasse, Rennweg, Prinz-Eugen-Strasse, Schwarzenbergplatz, Burggasse, Lerchenfelder Strasse, Josefstädter Strasse and Währinger Strasse.
• The demonstration concerns the Austrian government’s proposed university budget of approximately EUR 16 billion for 2028-2030.
• The Austrian Students’ Union (ÖH – Österreichische Hochschülerinnen) argues that at least EUR 18 billion is required to meet universities’ funding needs, raising concerns about potential reductions in course availability, student support and university staffing.
