As per reports, several workers were temporarily evacuated from a commercial storage facility on Norman Spencer Drive in Papatoetoe, Auckland, after chemical fumes were detected emanating from the premises around 0815 hours (local time) on Wednesday (15 October)
• Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) reported that the fumes originated from a chemical product used in the manufacture of dishwashing tablets that had undergone oxidation, possibly due to a reaction with water.
• Seven fire crews were dispatched to the site, and buildings were evacuated as a precautionary measure until the substance was identified and deemed non-hazardous. The affected chemical was safely removed from the facility, and workers were later allowed to return to the premises once the situation was confirmed safe.
