As per reports, at approximately 2100 hours (local time) on Wednesday (29 January), American Airlines Flight 5342, a Bombardier CRJ700 regional jet, collided with a helicopter as it was approaching the runway at Ronald Reagan National Airport in Washington, D.C.
• The flight, which had originated from Wichita, Kansas, was carrying up to 78 people. Following the collision, both aircraft came down in the Potomac River. Search and rescue operations were immediately launched, with multiple agencies, including fireboats, deployed to the scene.
• The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have both initiated investigations into the incident. As of the report, takeoffs and landings have been suspended at Ronald Reagan National Airport, affecting airport operations.
• The area’s airspace, already challenging due to restricted zones above government buildings and the presence of police and military helicopters, has become further congested.
