As per the United States Geological Survey (USGS), an earthquake measuring 5.0 magnitude was recorded 99 km south-southwest of Urakawa, Hokkaido, Japan, on Wednesday (17 December).

The tremor occurred at approximately 0950 hours (UTC), with the hypocenter located at a depth of 53.3 km. No tsunami warning was issued at the time of reporting.
