Description:
Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics (BMKG) forecast light rainfall across Jakarta on Tuesday (05 August) with temperatures between 24-31 degrees Celsius.
• The weather is likely to remain the same throughout the week, however weather forecast is dynamic.
• On Monday (04 August), heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds was reported in Bekasi, West Java, causing severe flooding in multiple residential areas, including Jatiwarna, Pondok Melati, and near Pasar Pondok Gede.
• Floodwaters reached depths of over one meter in several neighbourhoods such as Pasar Pondok Gede, Perumahan Patria Jaya, Perumahan Paranti Sejahtera, Perumahan Chandra Indah, and areas near the toll road.
• The heavy rainfall and wind led to vehicles, including motorcycles and cars, stalling in flooded streets. Some homes experienced roof damage, and fallen trees were reported.
Background:
Bekasi City Government declared a Disaster Emergency Status covering floods, extreme weather, and landslides effective from 25 July to 31 August, in response to ongoing sporadic heavy rainfall and natural hazard risks.
Impact:
The Jakarta region is anticipated to experience a mix of thunderstorms and cloudy weather throughout the week. If the weather deteriorates with more intense thunderstorms, the Jakarta region could face disruptions similar to those experienced during previous severe weather events.
Possible impacts include power outages caused by falling trees damaging overhead lines, lightning strikes impacting substations, and flooding affecting generation or distribution facilities. Such disruptions could lead to operational delays and impact businesses due to power supply disruptions.
• Transportation delays and route obstructions are likely, particularly in low-lying or landslide-prone areas.
Recommendations:
Residents and travelers are advised to stay updated on local forecasts for specific conditions in their areas due to the potential for heavy rainfall during thunderstorms. For further updates it is advised to monitor official website of BMKG via (https://www.bmkg.go.id/).
