Description:

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued weather alerts in some Indian metro cities as of Saturday (02 August). The warnings are as follows:

• Mumbai and Pune – No warning in forecast or nowcast. However, a yellow nowcast alert (valid till 1000 hours) is activated for light to moderate rainfall in Thane.
• Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar – No warning in forecast or nowcast.
• Delhi – No warning in forecast or nowcast.
• Gurugram – No warning in forecast or nowcast.
• Noida – Yellow alert issued in forecast for thunderstorm, lightning, and squall. No warning issued in nowcast valid till 0920 hours.
• Hyderabad – Yellow alert for strong surface wind issued in forecast with no active warning in nowcast.
• Chennai – Yellow warning issued for thunderstorm, lightning, and squall along with strong surface winds in forecast. No active warning issued in nowcast.
• Bengaluru – No warning issued in forecast or nowcast but strong surface winds are predicted.
• Kolkata – Yellow warning issued for thunderstorm, lightning, and squall along with strong surface winds in forecast. In nowcast valid upto 0900 hours, yellow alert issued for light rainfall and light thunderstorms.

Background:

The Yellow alert is the least severe and means “Be Aware.” It signals the possibility of light to moderate rainfall, suggesting that people should stay informed but no immediate action is necessary.

Impact:

• Flood-prone areas in Mumbai: Hindmata (Dadar), Sion, Matunga, Kurla, Chembur, Andheri Subway, and areas along the Mithi River, Vikhroli Parksite, Ghatkopar West, and slum settlements on hill slopes are also at high risk.
• Flood-prone areas in Pune: Sinhagad Road, Karve Road, Bhosale Nagar, Swargate, Katraj, Baner, Aundh, and Pimpri-Chinchwad, areas near the Mutha River are particularly vulnerable during dam water releases.
• Flood-prone areas in Bengaluru: Rainbow Drive Layout, Kendriya Vihar (Yelahanka), EcoSpace on Outer Ring Road, Marathahalli, Bellandur, Sarjapur, and Iblur.
• Flood-prone areas in Gurugram: NH-08 around Hero Honda Chowk, Basai, Dhankot, Sector 37, Ghata Jheel, Badshahpur Jheel, and Khandsa Talab.
• Flood-prone areas in Delhi: Rajghat Road, Sarai Kale Khan, Loha Pul, Vikas Marg, Shastri Park, Civil Lines, ITO, Yamuna Bazar, Geeta Colony, and Wazirabad, areas along the Najafgarh Drain, including Punjabi Bagh, Paschim Vihar, Nilothi, Baprola, and Dwarka, Qudsia Ghat, Tonga Stand, Vijay Ghat, and Gopalpur.
• Flood-prone areas in Hyderabad: Neighborhoods near the Musi River and Hussain Sagar Lake, including Kothapet, Mansoorabad, Falaknuma, Kacheguda, and Begum Bazar, have high inundation risks. Stormwater zones such as Kukatpally, Alwal, and Begumpet are also identified as major flood-prone areas.
• Flood-prone areas in Chennai: Chromepet, particularly along GST Road and Mummoorthy Nagar, faces severe flooding due to illegal sewage discharge into stormwater drains and poor maintenance. Other vulnerable localities include Ashok Nagar, West Mambalam, Kodambakkam, and Adyar, which have experienced flooding due to faulty drains and infrastructure issues.
• Flood-prone areas in Kolkata: Low-lying regions near the Hooghly River and areas with poor drainage infrastructure are particularly vulnerable. Camac Street, Roads adjacent to the Airport and certain areas in South Kolkata like Lake Gardens, stretch from Jadavpur bus stand to Jadavpur Police Station, are prone to waterlogging.
• Flood-prone areas in Ahmedabad: Helmet Circle, Valinath Chowk, AEC Circle, Naranpura Crossroads, RTO, and Lakhudi Talav Circle in the West Zone. Newly identified waterlogging spots include Saraspur, Rakhial, Makarba, Vejalpur, Bopal, Ghuma, and Danilimda.
• Flood-prone areas in Noida: Sectors adjacent to the Yamuna and Hindon rivers, where illegal constructions have been identified on floodplains.
