Description:
As per reports, approximately 100 subway workers associated with the Unite union in Glasgow are scheduled to go on three days of strike action from 11 July to 13 July.
• The strike action is aimed at seeking redressal of grievances regarding the current working conditions. The union demands improvements to the shifts, overtime, and weekend allowances.
• The union asserts that train drivers and station staff are routinely working up to 10 hours beyond their contracted 39 hours per week.
Background:
The industrial action stems from an ongoing dispute between Unite and Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) regarding working conditions. Previous industrial action occurred on 25 June, 27 June, and 28 June, also resulting in full subway closures.
Impact:
• The strike action is expected to bring the Glasgow subway service to a complete halt.
• Increased demand is likely to lead to congestion on bus services, taxis, and road networks.
• Ride-sharing wait times and costs are likely to surge during the strike period.
• Increased congestion on alternative transport routes may affect travel times for all employees, potentially leading to delays in cargo transport along busy routes.
• Traffic near Glasgow Green, City Centre, Queen Street, and Central Station is likely to experience major delays.
