As per reports, Beijing has lifted its red rainstorm warning issued early on Tuesday (05 August) but urged residents to remain cautious against natural disasters as heavy rainfall has led to evacuations of over 82,000 people.
Description:
The China Meteorological Administration (CMA) has continued to issue an orange warning for heavy rainfall, active from 0800 hours (local time) on Tuesday (05 August) to 0800 on Wednesday (06 August). The details are as follows:
• Heavy to torrential rainfall is expected in parts of the Liaodong Peninsula, southern Hebei, northern Shandong, northern Henan, the central Sichuan Basin, southeastern Fujian, southern Jiangxi, southern Hunan, central and eastern Guangxi, and Guangdong Province.
• Heavy rainstorms are forecast in southeastern Guangxi, the central and southeastern coastal areas of Guangdong Province, eastern Hebei, and northern Shandong.
• Torrential rainfall (250-350 mm) is expected in parts of eastern Guangxi and the central and southeastern coastal areas of Guangdong Province.
• Short bursts of heavy rainfall (maximum hourly rainfall of 20-50 mm, exceeding 80 mm in some locations), along with localized severe convective weather such as thunderstorms and strong winds, are likely across affected areas.
Background:
On Tuesday (04 August), the Ministry of Water Resources of the People’s Republic of China activated a Level IV emergency response for flood defense in Guangdong Province and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region at 1500 hours (local time). Heavy to torrential rainfall is forecast both Guangdong and Guangxi regions until Wednesday (06 August), driven by warm, humid southwesterly airflows.
Major rivers in the Pearl River Basin, including the Xijiang River and its tributaries Liujiang, Guijiang, Yujiang, and Hejiang, as well as the Beijiang, Dongjiang, and Hanjiang rivers, are experiencing rising water levels, with some expected to exceed warning thresholds.
Impact:
Transportation networks, including road, rail, and air services, are likely to face disruptions due to heavy rainfall activity. Drivers should anticipate potential road flooding and delays amid potential continuous rainfall and reduced visibility.
The authorities have also been urged to evacuate vulnerable populations to ensure public safety. The Ministry has deployed two working groups to Guangdong and Guangxi to assist with flood prevention operations.
