According to latest reports, following are the latest updates regarding the job quota protests by the students in Bangladesh, as of Thursday (01 August);
• Teachers and students of different departments of Dhaka University have announced to hold a rally and form a human chain on Thursday (01 August), from 1200 hours onwards, to protest the alleged police attack on students and teachers.
• The Anti-Discrimination Students’ Movement has also announced to hold nationwide-protests under the banner ‘remembering our heroes’ on Thursday (01 August), across all universities, courts, major intersections etc.
• Protest calls are being raised after the ‘March for Justice’ program saw widespread arrests on Wednesday (31 August). Affected areas in Dhaka included – High Court, Matsya Bhaban intersection, BUET, Doyel Chattar, Dhaka University, Shaheed Minar, Kadam Fountain, Jahangirnagar University, Mahua Mancha, and University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh.
• DMP Mirpur Division Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Masuk Mia has informed that the local police recovered 16 crude bombs from a protestor’s flat in Mizan Tower of Kalyanpur in Dhaka, on Wednesday (31 July), during a raid.
• Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan has stated that the government has initiated the process to ban Jamaat-e-Islami and its student front Islami Chhatra Shibir, on Wednesday (31 July), despite threats of protests.
• Reports indicate that the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) is planning to enhance its strength by adding more manpower, supplies and logistics to avert any violent situation of such magnitude in the future, amidst threats of further protests.
• Reportedly, the deputy commissioners of the relevant crime divisions have been asked to identify the ‘risky spots’ and send a list to the police headquarters regarding the number of arms and ammunition, tear gas shells and sound grenades needed to tackle any situation in those spots.
