As per reports, Mayor Eduardo Paes declared a state of emergency in the city of Rio de Janeiro on Sunday (14 January) afternoon due to significant flooding caused by heavy rainfall and thunderstorms that occurred during the early hours.

The Rio City Hall Operations Center informed that the municipality of Rio de Janeiro returned to Stage 03 at 1900 hours local time on Sunday (14 January) due to the absence of moderate rainfall forecast in the next few hours.

• Reports indicate that, as of Sunday (14 January) evening, the Fire Department confirmed 11 deaths in the North Zone of the capital and in Baixada Fluminense. Some victims have not yet been identified. There is still one person missing in Belford Roxo, in Baixada Fluminense.
• Reports also indicate that the State Government, through the Secretariat of Social Development and Human Rights, has set up a center for preparing and distributing meals inside the Restaurante do Povo de Duque de Caxias that will be delivered to shelters in the cities affected by rain.
• President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s government reportedly offered federal support.
• The storm reportedly flooded roads and affected the operation of bus and subway lines in Greater Rio. Power outages have been reported at the Ronaldo Gazolla Hospital and its basement remains flooded.
• In Belford Roxo, in Baixada, Mayor Wagner dos Santos Carneiro, also declared a public emergency in the municipality, which currently has more than 100 homeless people living in three temporary shelters.
• As a result of the flooding, certain scheduled competitions and examinations were postponed including those organized by Technical School Support Foundation (FACTEC – Fundação de Apoio à Escola Técnica), League of Samba Schools of Rio de Janeiro (Liesa) as well as the technical rehearsals of Portela and Unidos da Tijuca.
