Protests at Melbourne Defense Expo on 11 September; further demonstrations expected

Locations Affected: Australia

On 11 September, clashes broke out between protesters and police outside the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre during the Land Forces International Defense Expo (taking place 11-13 September). This marked Melbourne’s largest protest in 24 years, with around 1,000 police officers deployed from Victoria and New South Wales.

Reason for the protests

The protesters included groups advocating for various causes, such as pro-Palestine groups calling for an end to the Gaza conflict and environmental activists opposing the environmental impact of modern weapons.

Impact and disruptions due to the demonstrations

  • 1,200 to 1,500 protesters participated, carrying banners against the expo and other causes.
  • Protesters threw low-level acids, human waste, horse manure, and balloons with unknown liquids at police. Bins were set on fire.
  • Police used non-lethal methods, including capsicum spray and stun grenades, to control the situation.
  • 24 police officers were injured, and 39 protesters were arrested.
  • Several nearby businesses shut down, and city workers were advised to avoid the central business district (CBD).
  • Travel disruptions occurred, with road closures and public transport routes shortened, particularly trams in the city center.
  • On 12 September, protesters blocked traffic near the Spencer Street Bridge, closing several roads, including the Spencer and Flinders Street intersection.

Continuing protests and potential disruptions

Protests are expected to continue until 14 September. Heightened security and police presence is expected to persist near the Melbourne Convention Centre and CBD. Escalations are possible, and ongoing travel disruptions are likely. Organizations should stay informed and have contingency plans in place.
