NSW and Queensland Brace for Cyclone Alfred

Locations Affected: Australia

A cyclone watch has been issued for the first time in 50 years in New South Wales and Queensland. Cyclone Alfred is expected to make landfall by 06 March between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast, worsening weather conditions. The region is highly vulnerable to storm damage as it lacks proper infrastructure to combat cyclones.

Impact of the Cyclone

  • The storm is expected to bring 200 mm to 400 mm of rainfall. High tides leading to coastal inundation and flooding are also likely.
  • Massive swells and strong winds have already caused significant damage to boats on Bribie Island.
  • Shipping operations at Mooloolaba have been halted until the storm passes.
  • Authorities have warned residents from Sandy Cape, Queensland, to Grafton, New South Wales, to prepare for the storm’s impact. Sandbagging stations are open at key locations across southeast Queensland and NSW.
  • Areas along the Northern Rivers, including Tweed Heads, Coffs Harbour, Port Macquarie, Byron Bay, Ballina, Yamba, Woolgoolga, and Brooms Head, are on alert.

Forecast and Recommendations

Heavy rainfall is forecast to begin on 05 March and continue through the weekend. The cyclone is expected to intensify into a Category 02 storm with maximum sustained wind speeds of 89-164 kph. Widespread destruction is likely due to gusty winds and heavy rainfall, potentially

causing damage to signs, trees, buildings, and crops. Damage to utility infrastructure may lead to power outages and communication disruptions. Travel disruptions, including ferry and flight cancellations, are possible. The closure of ferry terminals could cut off island communities from the mainland and essential supplies.
