Locations Affected: Australia
Record rainfall in northeast Australia over the past few days has triggered widespread flooding, resulting in two casualties, the evacuation of thousands from low-lying coastal suburbs and towns in Queensland, and power outages. Townsville, Ingham, and Cardwell were among the most affected by the flash flooding. Rollingstone recorded 1,280 mm (50.3 inches) of rainfall, while areas between Innisfail and Townsville received up to 600 mm (23 inches) over the past week. According to the Australian Bureau of Meteorology, the region has received six months’ worth of rainfall in just three days.
Reason for the Flooding
Two low-pressure tropical systems caused heavy rainfall and gusty winds for multiple days, leading to severe flooding. North Queensland, located in the tropics, is particularly vulnerable to cyclones, storms, and flooding. However, the intensity and frequency of extreme rainfall events have increased due to climate change driven by human activity.
Impact of the Flooding
- The Australian Bureau of Meteorology extended a severe weather warning on 03 February for parts of coastal Queensland, indicating the possibility of severe thunderstorms with heavy to intense rainfall. Flood warnings were issued for areas along six overflowing rivers.
- Flooding caused a bridge collapse along the Bruce Highway, which connects the south and far north of Queensland, as well as parts of roads between Townsville and Cairns, impairing relief and rescue efforts.
- Wind gusts of up to 100 km/h were recorded across Townsville and most of North Queensland.
- Ingham Airport was closed on 02 February due to the heavy rainfall.
- More than 11,000 people in northern Queensland faced power cuts after Ingham and Cardwell sub-stations were switched off due to inundation.
- Authorities have begun releasing water through spillways on the Ross River Dam to relieve pressure from overflowing rivers.
- Queensland’s Department of Environment, Science and Innovation warned residents in north Queensland about crocodiles lurking in the floodwaters.
Weather Forecast and Outlook
Rainfall is expected to continue in the coming days, leading to further rises in water levels in various areas. A warning for rising water levels and heavy rainfall remains in effect for residents between Cairns and Mackay until 05 February. Floodwaters are also expected to continue increasing in Ingham.
A decrease in inundation will take several days due to persistent rainfall. Damage to utility infrastructure may cause disruptions in power supply and communication. Flooding and transport blockages could also lead to delays in supply chain operations. Flight delays and cancellations remain possible depending on weather conditions. Organizations are advised to stay updated on weather warnings and follow instructions issued by authorities.
