As per reports, a post-Christmas winter storm is affecting large parts of the Northeast United States, placing more than 23 million people under winter storm warnings on Friday (26 December). The affected areas include parts of the Great Lakes, Mid-Atlantic, and Southern New England.
As per the NOAA National Weather Service Weather Prediction Center, the storm is producing a multi-hazard winter weather event, including heavy snow, sleet, and freezing rain. Hazardous conditions are expected to persist from Friday (26 December) into Saturday (27 December) morning.
• As per forecast guidance, freezing rain accumulations exceeding 0.25 inches are expected from northwest Pennsylvania into western Maryland, creating conditions conducive to tree damage and power outages.
• A mixed precipitation zone, including sleet and freezing rain, is expected across central Pennsylvania and the Washington, D.C., Baltimore, and Philadelphia metropolitan areas.
• As per meteorological assessments, heavy snowfall is expected from central New York through northeast Pennsylvania, extending into the New York City tri-state area.
• Snow accumulation of at least six inches is expected in much of this zone, with locally higher totals possible. The greater New York metropolitan area accounts for a significant portion of the population under warning.
