According to reports, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar has resigned from his post on Monday (21 July), citing health concerns and the need to prioritise medical care.

• The resignation, addressed to President Droupadi Murmu, is effective immediately and has been made under Article 67(a) of the Constitution.
• As per the Constitution, in the event of a vacancy in the office of Vice President, the Deputy Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha steps in as the Acting Chairperson of the Upper House. Currently, that position is held by Harivansh Narayan Singh (appointed in August 2022), who will fulfil this role temporarily.
• A formal election to fill the vacancy of the Vice President must be held within 60 days of the resignation. The electorate comprises all members of both Houses of Parliament, using a proportional representation system via single transferable vote.
